The West Campus Neighborhood

West Campus is a collection of several neighborhoods that truly help to keep Austin weird — in the best possible way! Known for its collection of colorful eclectic bungalows, mansions, houses, and condos, the West Campus neighborhood has undergone rapid growth over the past few years and has become one of the most desirable locations for college students to live in Austin, TX. This is primarily due to the neighborhood’s close location to the University of Texas at Austin and its bicycle-friendly roadways and walkable commutes. The West Campus area is an easy and quick commute to campus and is close to university facilities, including The Blanton Museum of Art, The Harry Ransom Center, and the LBJ Library. Other nearby landmarks include The Bob Bullock Texas State History Museum, an Imax Theater, and the scenic Pease Park.

West Campus borders West 29th Street, Guadalupe Street, North Lamar Boulevard, and Martin Luther King Jr Boulevard. This neighborhood is believed to be one of the densest communities in Austin and now is said to accommodate around 17,000 individuals, many of whom are students at the University of Texas at Austin. Despite the rise in growth, West Campus is considered to be a very safe area that boasts a low crime rate. The area is surrounded by what is known as The Drag, a collection of storefronts offering a wide selection of retailers that carry school supplies including new and used textbooks. The Drag is also home to numerous clothing stores, restaurants, and the University Coop.

Thanks to the University Neighborhood Overlay Plan that passed in 2004, a bustling residential community was developed in the West Campus neighborhood. During the time of the plan, the West Campus area saw around 2,400 apartments and condominium units constructed to house the influx of students moving to the area. This development has helped the community around The University of Texas at Austin grow into what it is today, and it has also helped to revitalize the community into a thriving and fun place to live.
